The other day I stopped in Barneys to take a look at main floor bags. Unfortunately my trusty Viktor & Rolf bag (see here!) has been busy taking a Leather Spa vacation. I was strolling just past Nina Ricci and Christian Louboutin when a new section of bags caught my eye. Bits of burgundy, calf-hair, and slouchy black leather?! Literally, it felt like there was a glowing spotlight above them! Maiyet is the name of the label, and it has the most refreshing and luxurious branding I’ve seen in a long time. It has also made me utter the phrase “artisan chic,” which I never thought I would. When it comes to RTW and accessories, I tend to associate “artisan” anything with hippy patchwork leather totes displayed at craft fairs in my liberal intelligentsia childhood neighborhood. It turns out Maiyet employs master craftsmen from Colombia, India, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Mongolia, Peru, and other exotic locales. Maiyet’s mission is to promote sustainable job growth and entrepreneurship. One can definitely tell that special attention has been paid to every little detail… very admirable, indeed.
