Model Exposure

01.22.11 | Comment?

I just finished watching the documentary Picture Me. I’d been waiting to see it, and just this week saw that it was available on Netflix Instant Play (#NetflixObsession)! It follows the career and life of model Sara Ziff from the age of 18 to 23. It’s shot by her and her boyfriend Ole Schell (a then recent film school grad). Pretty interesting… a great (unscripted!) insight into the world of modeling as well as fashion. At the end of the film, then 25-year-old Katia Kokoreva is asked in a short interview what she wants to do after modeling. She replies, “Really, it has to be connected to fashion. I don’t know how to do anything else.” It’s amazing what a bubble the fashion industry can be.

It reminds me of a documentary I saw a couple of years ago called America the Beautiful. While Picture Me focuses on the world of modeling, America the Beautiful attempts to explore the general idea of beauty in America. The film also tells the story of Gerren Taylor, who began modeling on the catwalk at the age of twelve.

Take a look at these films if you want to hear different perspectives on these important issues. Like Sara Ziff says in her documentary, “It’s hard to make sense of the fashion industry when you’re in it.”

Definitely agree. I’d say that’s entirely evident: from my industry-twisted belief that chipped nail polish at an interview is a job lost to the pressure we often feel to be under a size 4… model or not!
